Jair Bolsonaro has been detained after authorities found he posed a concrete flight risk while under domestic detention.

The ex-president was sentenced of planning a government overthrow in last fall and given more than over two decades in prison, but he continued under home detention pending appeals.

Top Judicial Official Alexandre de Moraes said the action to imprison the septuagenarian politician was a safety action after fresh information came to light.

This included attempting to break his ankle monitor and a summons to a supporters' gathering that could facilitate a possible escape.

Judicial Records Show Escape Risks

In a paperwork permitting the detention, the judge said information from the unit overseeing Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the one-time head of state's aim to disable the tracking monitor to secure accomplishment in his getaway".

This, it said, would be assisted by the confusion caused by the protest called by his offspring.

His son, Flávio, who works as a congressional representative, called for a gathering of his followers near the former president's residence to take place on Saturday evening.

His son wrote on social media on last Friday: Will you battle for your homeland, or see it all from your mobile device there on your settee? I invite you to fight with us."

He said the gathering would be so backers could offer prayers for his health and for the return of democracy in our land."

Embassy Asylum Concerns

Part of the judge's decision was the chance of his move to foreign missions near the residence, considering that the investigations revealed a history of arranging to request asylum through a embassy office", a statement said.

The court filing emphasizes that the American diplomatic mission in the capital, the capital city, is situated around 13km from the former president's residence.

International Reactions

Bolsonaro's legal woes have generated frustration from fellow conservative nationalist United States President President Trump, leading him to impose a fifty percent tax on imports of Brazilian goods.

The former president is being held in a Federal Police station in the capital and will undergo a custody hearing on Sunday.

Recent Legal Requests

It was only on last Friday that the his legal team asked the High Court to authorize him to serve his whole jail sentence under home confinement, with tracking devices.

They also petitioned that Bolsonaro be permitted to exit his dwelling for medical treatment, saying he needed frequent medical attention for respiratory ailments and other illnesses.

Background on Conviction

The former president was convicted of heading a scheme aimed at retaining his authority after he failed to win the 2022 election to his political opponent, President Lula.

Supreme Court justices said that he had knowledge of a plot which involved plans to kill Lula and his running partner, his vice-presidential candidate, and to arrest and execute the presiding judge - the top judicial official who has been overseeing his judicial proceedings.

The plot was stopped because it didn't receive the support of the armed forces officials. Lula was sworn in without issue on January 1st, 2023.

But a week later, on 8 January, thousands of Bolsonaro supporters attacked and damaged government buildings in the national capital, Brasília.

The law enforcement stepped in and around fifteen hundred individuals were taken into custody.

The magistrates found that the demonstrators had been provoked by Bolsonaro whose strategy, they said, was for the country's army to intervene, reestablish control and bring him back to power.

At the moment, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the over 27-year sentence extremely harsh.

He was also banned from campaigning for office until twenty-sixty - eight years after the completion of his term.

The ex-leader called the court case a "witch hunt and said it was intended to stop him running in the 2026 national vote.
