Meteorological devices containing a large quantity of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was required to halt operations for hours when multiple of them floated into the airspace of Lithuania.
Air Travel Interruptions
The airport closure led to thirty canceled flights impacting 6,000 passengers, with authorities cautioning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Authorities reported that 25 meteorological balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two of which ending up precisely above the aviation facility.
Approximately 14 of the weather balloons launched over the weekend drifted across the Vilnius area, which is situated near Lithuania's capital city and close to the Belarusian boundary.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
At least 11 balloons carrying numerous containers of contraband smoking materials have been collected so far, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to border security officials.
International Illegal Trade
Although causing problems, representatives clarified that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - Belarusian smoking products - are not unusual in the Baltic region and Poland."
To date in the current year, 544 balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were recorded last year.
Neighboring Country Impact
At the same time, the border area of Poland, which also borders Belarus, has documented over one hundred incidents in which smuggled items were delivered from its neighbor using the meteorological equipment.
Illegal Transport Methods
When questioned about why smugglers utilize a method that is highly susceptible to weather factors rather than more controllable drones, officials clarified that "Meteorological balloons are rudimentary tools used by contraband transporters - they are less expensive than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Officials added that "Our services' aim is to seize the largest possible amounts of illegal goods and to detain organisers and participants so that these practices become economically unsustainable and present no risk to commercial air travel."
Regional Security Context
These airspace violations occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have caused air traffic disruption across the region.
Similar occurrences in nearby states have caused EU officials to fast-track conversations about improving airspace protection throughout European airspace.
